High school physics teacher Jamahl A. Peavey seems to think so. He’s hoping for an early end to “the mathematization of physics”. He predicts that physics may wind up as a branch of engineering. Why? “Engineers get results.” And they look at physical reality and what is actually happening; engineers don’t “give up their eyeballs.”

On the other hand, he’s heard the message from physicists that when they unify physics it won’t bring anything new to the world. (Such as new energy technologies, clean power systems?)

I assume he is making the point that engineers create useful solutions and technologies for the everyday world but mathematicians are less likely to be down-to-earth practical. “They should stop talking about multiple universes and maybe they’ll start loving science again.” Peavey said he can’t encourage his students to go into physics because the students realize that if they do and then later fall out of favor with the reigning clique, their physics career would be ruined.

Takes courage to say things like that while particle physicists are still claiming that every wave and fragment of an atom belongs to their well-funded domain.

Peavey says someone like himself who loves physics passionately has a right to criticize physics. Further, as an engineer he can share his own insights. He had been teaching and studying physics more than seven years before he finally had a moment of clarity in which “all the ideas of past generations could be brought into a testable gravitational and electromagnetic interface.”

Today I listened/watched the World Science Database video conference that documentary filmmaker (Einstein Wrong: The Miracle Year) David de Hilster has been hosting for the past couple of years. Dissident scientists from around the world share their thoughts on these Saturday chats. Today’s presenter, Jamahl Peavey, says he fell in love with physics in high school and later got a degree in mechanical engineering. While studying at the university level he worked on something called  “The Einstein Papers Project”, rediscovered his love for physics and began to investigate its history.

His conclusion?  That much of what he studied experimentally was valid, but the interpretation wasn’t.

He says that to teach effectively, he wants to not only show how things happen but why things happen. In 2000, Jamahl graduated from Cambridge College, Cambridge MA with a Masters’ degree in Education.  When he got out and taught physics, he says, he rediscovered questions that were never really answered during his time as an undergraduate — many of the same questions that plagued Einstein to his dying day.  In order to answer these questions he needed a new perspective.

His master’s studies specialized in Special Education.  Jamahl realized that people who have disabilities are sometimes just learning differently. Mechanical Engineering, the visual art of understanding how machines work, played an essential role in his ability to teach them. He says that teaching with simple models to those who understand the least sharped his logic.

“Humans have a closer connection to mechanics than they do to math.”

While scrolling through emails that I missed answering or even reading while in the midst of moving months ago, I found a link to a video regarding a proposed mercury-based anti-gravity system. I’ve seen a lot of weird-science videos; this one seems to be a cut above the rest — it gives a lot of clues even if the guy apparently hasn’t built a ship himself. It’s definitely for the serious experimenter who knows what he or she is handling. A briefer probably earlier version of the video is here. Thanks for the links, Mike H. Yesterday afternoon I met with longtime friend John Hutchison and his partner Nancy L., and on the way I saw new friend Timo J. from Germany, who does science experiments for a foundation which bought the remaining anti-gravity experimental equipment from John. Later in the fall John will go to Germany and show them how he created the fields that achieved the unusual levitation effects.

John and Nancy will continue mixing the minerals and circuits that, after they cool and harden, pull in energy from surrounding space. The amount of voltage that can be created is small, but the cells could be hooked together to create larger effects. Amperage is even smaller, but I’m told that there are useful applications for higher voltage, lower amperage power. There’s more going on than is understood; Nancy said that while she was completing one of the cells, suddenly it caused the aluminum underneath it to melt.

John is one of the experimenters who have signed contracts to demonstrate on-camera for the Ultimate Energy Showdown film project (see June 18 and 19 blogposts.)

In the evening we went to barbeque hosted by YueQing Yang and celebrated the contract signing for a Chinese version of Breakthrough Power.

At that conference I interviewed “free energy” inventors from Germany and astrophysicist Adam Trombly and other leading zero-point-energy researchers from the USA. I met people who later became helpful allies, such as Toby Grotz.

Here’s the excerpt from what I wrote for M.J.Milne’s book, reprinted here with her permission:

“My turning point came in 1987. Previously I had met an inventor, Bill Muller, who introduced me to a new energy-research field which has potential to clean up our world, make oil wars and power grids obsolete, and enable regional economies of energy abundance. Mainstream media labeled the field “free energy” and ridiculed it as “impossible perpetual motion.”

“But I don’t claim to have perpetual motion machines,” the inventor protested. “I just have a super-efficient magnetic motor/generator.”

However he named his company Pran Technologies. “Prana” describes a universal background energy, a life force. Concepts such as prana and chi were dismissed by western scientists, but the inventor could see no other source for whatever continually replenishes the field around a permanent magnet. Later, others would turn to quantum physics and its “zero-point quantum fluctuations of the vacuum of space” to explain what energizes their unusual energy converters.

All that was a far stretch from my university degree, Sociology. But I’m a journalist with insatiable curiosity and driven to use this lifetime productively. When I learned about the international underground of “free energy” researchers, I decided to write a general book for the public about this fascinating subculture with all its drama.

The problem was that I lacked a strong belief in the importance of my possible contributions. This fact surfaced when I saw my scientist friends preparing to attend a conference in Hanover, Germany. The Pran Tech inventor, Bill Muller, was invited to speak, along with other inventors and scientists whom an author should interview if she was to write a book about quantum-leap new energy systems. The meeting would gather leading lights of the field internationally; I wasn’t even a minor techie. Being unemployed at the time, I also lacked travel funds.

The Muller family made their travel plans and enthused about the scientists they would be meeting. The conference would attract an audience of nearly a thousand, mostly engineers.

One night my perspective did a complete turnaround. Suddenly I heard an insistent message in my head in authoritative tones, “The only thing stopping you from going to Hanover is your belief that you don’t belong there!”

I paid attention, since I had begun to study a spiritual path and was learning to listen for inner guidance. My thinking shifted. If that’s the case, then how might I get there?

Everything fell into place easily. My eldest son lent me the airfare. When I returned after the conference it became obvious how I could quickly repay him; I opened the Vancouver Sun and saw a classified ad for a community newspaper editor in a town where I had connections.

I got the job, wrote the book, served on the board of the New Energy Movement (NEM) and co-founded NEM Canada. Those grassroots organizations, when allied with other world-changing initiatives of the people, could help bring about a more conscious civilization on Earth. Denmark has a “renewable energy island”, Greece is planning a similar network on an island, Iceland of course led the world with their hydrogen economy, and a district on the south side of Stockholm, Sweden, milks every last joule and watt out of their household wastes. Those are just a few of the European projects in which people use common sense instead of just doing everything the way every other city or town does.

Willis is interviewing an industrialist, a Mr. Thomas, in the 1973 film reproduced on the DVD. It touches my heart to see Thomas — obviously an intelligent, dedicated humanitarian — firmly believing that his breakthrough will be allowed to replace polluting energy technologies such as oil, coal or nuclear power plants. He presents his story with both dignity and determination to succeed.

Mr. Thomas’ successful engineering company — 50 engineers employed by it — had gone broke during the years of developing what he calls the Energy Regain system. To bring out a refrigeration application of the Energy Regain, he started a new company, Energetic.  The vice-president of a large company in that field testified on film that the Energy Regain system makes all other refrigeration equipment obsolete. And that was just one application.

Mr. Thomas’ dream of replacing polluting energy gradually beginning in the 1970s was not allowed. The gift was withheld from us.

ATMOSPHERE UNDER ASSAULT
THE PLOT AGAINST HURRICANES

The term “hurricane” is an official but arbitrary designation for a tropical storm that reaches sustained wind speeds of more than 75 miles per hour. Thus a single storm might pick up speed and become a “hurricane”, then lose speed and be downgraded to a “tropical storm”, then gain speed again and so on, several times in the course of it’s existence. There therefore is really no such thing as a “hurricane”,  distinct from other tropical storms of the same type.

These strong tropical storms are quite common seasonally in the regions where they occur. They form along the equator, on both sides of it, and move toward the pole as they gain in strength. In modern times, forecasting when they will make landfall so inhabitants of low-lying coastal areas can evacuate has become the most important safety precaution available.

Other protective measure include building codes that try to design structures to withstand the high winds, and insurance coverage to enable owners of damaged buildings to rebuild afterward.

Despite all efforts, however, nearly every year finds one or more hurricanes causing what the news media term a “natural disaster”. When this happens the cameras pan over the wreckage and the announcer’s voice describes the suffering of the “innocent victims” of “nature’s wrath”. The wisdom of millions of people choosing to live in a low-lying coastal area where hurricanes are known to be a frequent occurrence is never mentioned. It is taken for granted that cities and such large populations belong there and it is “nature” that is to blame if they suffer any damage.

In the well-known case of New Orleans, the media constantly used the term “natural disaster”.  Not many were asking if maybe it was not very smart to build a city of 2,000,000 people in a low-lying coastal area known to have frequent hurricanes. Most of them simply assumed New Orleans belonged there.

More recently, in Haiti, many people were killed by mudslides caused by heavy rains. The heavy rains were inevitable in that climate. The mudslides, however, could have been avoided by not deforesting the hillsides uphill from where the people lived. The media called it a “natural disaster” and called the people “innocent victims”, but in fact they were not innocent; they had committed suicide by deforesting the hills above their villages.

But as a direct result of these and other news stories reflecting the views of the media ( and those who own the media ) there has been a growing demand in recent years to “do something” about hurricanes. The people who are asking that “something be done” about hurricanes are not demanding that “something be done” about deforestation, or about the construction of large cities in coastal zones, or about allowing millions of people to live in those areas. Those factors are simply accepted as normal and inevitable, and the demand is to “do something” about the hurricanes instead.

While at first glance it might seem not much could be done about such powerful storms, there have in fact been several suggestions along those lines.  As long ago as the 1960s, the United States  Air Force tried seeding hurricanes in the Caribbean in the hope that they could be induced to use up most of their water content before reaching land. This program was not successful.

More recently other suggestions have been made, and one of them has been tried out by accident. The suggestion that a thin coating of oil on the waters of the ocean would retard evaporation sufficiently to prevent storms from growing is now being seen in action in the Gulf of Mexico as a result of an accidental oil spill. We shall soon see if this hypothesis has any merit.

By whatever means, though, it would be a serious mistake to prevent or weaken hurricanes. They are a normal and necessary part of the global environment we live in and are essential to the functioning of the coastal ecosystems of the regions where they occur.

Because they are a regular, seasonal phenomena, hurricanes are a part of the expected annual series of weather events and all species that live in a hurricane zone are adapted to their regular recurrence. They are therefore a part of the process that keeps the ecology in dynamic balance. Many species are dependent on them for creating the conditions they need.

A few examples:

1. Hurricanes over water stir up bottom sediment which provides extra nourishment to plankton, which are the base of the oceanic food chain, so for several weeks after a hurricane all aquatic life florishes.

2. Swift-churning waters break off small pieces of coral reefs, which are carried some distance away and sink to the bottom to grow into new reefs. This is one important way in which coral propagates, so without hurricanes the reefs would continue to grow in size,but could not spread to other areas to start new reefs.

3. When a big tree falls, the gap in the canopy allows sunlight to reach a lot of seedlings and underbrush which need sunlight to grow and could not grow in the shade of the big tree. Many species in a forest community need these gaps and the sunlight they permit  to fill their role in the forest ecosystem.

4. While a big fallen tree is being recycled back into the forest floor to provide nutrients for a next generation of trees, it is also providing years of food and habitat for the insects and microbes that do the recycling.

5. It also is providing habitat for many species of animal life that hide in the tangle of broken branches to protect them from predators.

6. In areas where hurricanes are common, all native species are adapted to them. Non-native species in adjacent areas, which are not so adapted, therefore are kept out of the area by the recurring hurricanes. If the hurricanes stopped, they would be able to invade the former hurricane zone, to the detriment of the native species there, as all introduced species are always destructive to native species that are not adapted to them.

7. In areas where hurricanes are common, a significant portion of the yearly water supply comes from them. Without hurricanes there would be a water short-fall amounting to a major drought.

8. The water shortfall could not be made up by simply causing extra ordinary rainstorms because the heavy downpour typical of hurricanes provides enough water all at once to flush out coastal ecosystems and rejuvenate them. Since this is an annual event, these coastal ecosystems are adapted to it and need it.

9. Low-lying coastal areas in the tropics and subtropics are the richest, most diverse ecosystems on earth. Many such areas are under heavy threat from unrestricted development. Other areas are still relatively intact because the frequency of hurricanes discourages human occupation. If hurricanes were no longer a factor, these fragile coastal ecosystems would soon be overrun by development from which they are now protected by the fact that hurricanes are common there.

From these few examples, it should be plain that a program to prevent hurricanes or weaken them to the point of any significant alteration of their major features, would be a disasterous mistake. Yet there is an increasing chorus of voices demanding that “something be done” about this important and much-needed phenomena and sooner or later “something” will be attempted. So now is the time for people who understand the necessity for hurricanes to start to organize to protect them from those who in their ignorance, would attempt to tamper with them.

Instead of waiting until it is too late and a program of hurricane suppression is already underway, a movement to protect our atmosphere from well-meaning, but ignorant interference which could spell incalulable disaster should be begun now, while there is still time to gain strength before any serious damage is done to ability of the atmosphere to support the conditions upon which life depends.
