How can we build a world in which harmony is reestablished between humans and nature for the well-being of all life? Indigenous peoples from various countries will speak to such questions via a new gathering. A ‘World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth’ is scheduled for Cochabamba, Bolivia, on April 19 to 22, 2010. Lacking funding but having an abundance of vision, they have a simple but potentially transformative website at http://pwccc.wordpress.com/.
If I were there I’d be attracted to several working groups, from Technology Transfer to the one titled Harmony with Nature for Living Well. Its website page notes that “Change the system, not the climate” has become a familiar slogan. But what kind of system should replace today’s dominant system? The group will analyze what alternatives are being built at local, national, regional and international levels to challenge the current system which is based on consumption, waste and the marketing of life and nature. A different world is definitely necessary – and possible.
